Introduction
Below is a sample cost and configuration breakdown to have ISC LAN Technology Services (LTS) host a virtual machine on their ESX server
This estimate was put together in April of 2008. Current costs may be higher.
Cost and Configuration
LTS runs a VMWare ESX server in the Facilities Management Computer Room of 3401 Walnut Street. They offer hosting and administration services for virtual machines on this server.
Cost
Approximately $2,000 per year for a single virtual machine, with no adminstration provided by LTS. This includes:
- Server behind a hardware firewall – cost includes maintenance of the firewall policies for client server
- Rack space in the Facilities Management Computer room – cost includes facilities management and environment cost
- Standard back-up strategy; (using Grandfather/Father/Son rotation schedule).
- In case of hardware failure, we guarantee that the server is back-up and available within a 48 – 72 hour period.
Configuration
LTS commits to the following configuration for what they refer to as a “low resource VM”
- memory (2gig),
- number of processors (1)
- hard-disk space (2 partitions: 20Gig for OS; 120 – 150 Gig Data).
LTS provides additional services for additional cost, but this is the base breakdown for a single VM.
