--Mcaleese 16:39, 2 May 2008 (EDT)

Purpose - Assist non-IT staff, such as Business Administrators (BAs), with understanding the institutional benefits of Green IT as it relates to both desktop / endusers and data centers.

Action Step - Develop a brief presentation on the benefits of Green IT. Present at Business Administrator (BA) Forums.

Bob Dugan, Executive Director for School of Medicine (SOM) Administration, approves the SOM BA Forum Agenda. He's looking forward to a presentation from the Green IT Group. Please contact him at: rdugan@exchange.upenn.edu, 215-573-0681.

Stress environmental / economic / institutional impacts

Concepts to Consider

  • Saving Energy Reduces Costs - Where is IT energy used?
  • How best to KILL-a-Watt?
  • Energy Star: Get to know it!
  • Life Cycle Costing (What are the savings over time?)
  • Are there government, tax or industry incentives to consider?
  • How will you communicate best practices to staff?
  • Desktops / End Users - Point out obvious and not so obvious energy consumption targets.
  • Data Centers - what are they, in a nutshell? (provide a simple example)
  • Collaborative Considerations: Be sure to touch bse with LSPs, Facilities and Vendors when planning / purchasing IT.
  • Benchmarking / Monitoring / Measuring

(What's the baseline for consumption? What monitoring tools are available? How will you measure progress?)

  • Virtualization (What is it, and what are the cost benefits?)
  • Recycling - a wide variety of options are available
