Notes to Team Members/Testers

Please re-work this page as you see fit (the addition of completely new sections beyond just the Evaluation Criteria section below are certainly welcome) and add whatever comments you feel would be helpful to the evaluation. We've listed the evaluation criteria below, so that when you get a chance, you can just answer those questions directly on this page. When you are done with this page, you may remove these instructions.

Evaluation Criteria/Things to Test

Connectivity to University's major email servers

Testing connection to Pobox:

  • POP
    • Set up account using SSL
      • Wizard style account setup very easy to use
      • No connection problems
  • IMAP
    • Set up account using SSL
      • Wizard style account setup very easy to use
      • All folders are auto-subscribed (even the invisible ones)

Does the client explicitly support authenticated SMTP?

Yes. Authentication using SSL is supported.

Does the client support authenticated IMAP/POP (SSL/TLS and/or Kerberos/GSSAPI)?

Yes. Mail supports both SSL and Kerberos.

Does the client support authenticated LDAP?

Apple Mail pulls the directory search from the Address Book application. Authenticated search is supported, but does not return all hidden results for a record.

Does the client have a built-in, trainable spam filtering tool/option compatible with the popular IMAP server on campus (University of Washington)?

Mail does have a built-in, trainable spam filter. Whether or not it is explicitly compatible with the IMAP server on campus is not clear.

Spell-checking built-in?

Mail uses the built-in operating system dictionary for spell checking.

How easily can you create and then select one signature from multiple signatures created for a single identity (rate 1-5, 5=very easy)?

I would give this feature a 5. Multiple signatures can be created, and assigned to various email accounts. When creating a message, there is a drop down list of the signatures available for that particular account.

Can you redirect a message?

Yes. You have the choice to either redirect a message or bounce it back to the sender.

How easily can you create a filter (rate 1-5, 5=very easy)?

I would rate this a 4. You need to go to the application preferences, and select Rules. From there, some fairly complex rules can be built.

Does it have a mechanism to import/export filters to/from other email applications?

I did not see one available.

How easily can you import/export messages to/from other email applications (rate 1-5, 5=very easy)?

I would rate this a 5. Go to File --> Import, and walk through the wizard. You can either import from an application on the local machine, or import an exported mail set.

Is subscribing to new folders automatic?

Yes. I did not see a way to unsubscribe to particular folder, such as the invisibile folders not necessary for everyday functioning.

How easily can the client be used with PGP/GPG (rate 1-5, 5=very easy)?
