Apple's newest version of Mac OS, Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, has implemented a new interface for connecting to wireless networks. Follow the instructions below to manually configure your Mac OS 10.5 system to connect to AirPennNet or AirSAS.

Important note: Penn's supported 802.1X supplicant, Internet Connect, does not function with Mac OS 10.5. DO NOT install the Internet Connect supplicant from the Fall 2007 PennConnect DVD (or earlier editions), or from the Supported Products web page.

Important note: 10.5.1 includes some fixes that improve 802.1X behavior on 10.5, but there are still some remaining issues. It is strongly recommended that people upgrade to 10.5.1 to get better handling of 802.1X.

Setting up a connection to AirPennNet or AirSAS in Mac OS 10.5

  1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences... The System Preferences window will open.
  2. Click the Network icon. The window will change to show Network settings.
  3. From the Locations drop-down menu, choose Edit Locations..., then click the plus (+) button.
  4. Enter AirPennNet or AirSAS for the name of your location, then click the Done button.
Important note: If you have a pre-existing AirPennNet or AirSAS configuration from a previous installation of the Internet Connect component from PennConnect, you must remove it first and re-do its configuration by following these steps.
  5. From the Locations dropdown menu, choose AirPennNet or AirSAS.
  6. In the left pane, highlight each device except AirPort and Built-In Ethernet and click the minus (-) button to remove it, leaving AirPort and Built-In Ethernet as the sole devices.
  7. Click the Advanced... button.
  8. Click the 802.1X tab.
  9. In the Domain: dropdown menu, select User.
  10. In the left pane below Configurations, click the plus (+) button and enter AirPennNet or AirSAS.
  11. In the User Name: field, enter your actual PennKey username.
  12. In the Password: field, enter your actual PennKey password.
  13. In the Wireless Network: field, enter AirPennNet or AirSAS.
  14. In the Authentication: field, ensure only TTLS is checked, then highlight the selection.
  15. Click the Configure... button.
  16. In the TTLS Inner Authentication dropdown box, select PAP.
  17. Leave Outer Identity: blank, then click the OK button.
  18. Click OK to dismiss the 802.1X settings window.
  19. Click Apply to activate your 802.1X settings you've configured in the Network settings of System Preferences. Optionally close the System Preferences window.
  20. To connect, select AirPennNet or AirSAS from the AirPort dropdown menu. (Do not use the dropdown menu in the Network pane in System Preferences: see note below)
    • Steps 21 to 26 may occur only on your initial connection to AirPennNet or AirSAS.
  21. If the Verify Certificate dialog box appears, click Show Certificate.
  22. Click the Always trust "noc1.dccs.upenn.edu" checkbox.
  23. Click the triangle icon to expand the Trust settings.
  24. In the When using this certificate: dropdown menu, select Always Trust.
  25. Click Continue.
  26. If a dialog box appears to request authentication to make a change, enter your Mac's username and password, then click OK.

Important notes: Due to a bug in the initial release of Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, do not use the dropdown menu from the Network pane in System Preferences. Instead, use the AirPort dropdown menu in the upper right hand corner of the menu bar and select either the AirPennNet or AirSAS wireless network. Alternatively, select Join Other Network...and type AirPennNet or AirSAS; select 802.1X WEP from the Security drop-down box; enter PennKey username and password in the appropriate fields, and select AirPennNet from the 802.1X dropdown menu; click Join.

If these instructions fail the first time, you may need to remove certain items from your Keychain. Launch Keychain Access from Applications --> Utilities --> Keychain Access. Highlight any entries with name AirPennNet or AirPennNet 802.1X in the Kind category of Internet Connect, then hit the delete button (or control-click to delete it).
