Connecting to AirPennNet with Windows Mobile 2003

Setting up the connection to AirPennNet using Secure W2 v3.20b

The 3.1.2 Secure W2 client does not work with AirPennNet. Version 3.20b Secure W2 TTLS client has been tested on a Dell Axim X50v running Windows Mobile 2003, 2nd ed. Instructions are below, but be aware that:

  • This is currently a beta product
  • This has not been tested with Windows Mobile 5

Instructions

  1. Download and install the Secure W2 3.20 beta client from Secure W2's beta discussion forum
  2. Once installed, perform a soft reset on your device
    • Instructions for soft resetting your device will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
    • Usually there is small button on the back of the handheld that can be depressed with a stylus or paperclip
  3. Enable WiFi if it is not already enabled
  4. Go to Start-->Settings-->Connections-->Dell WLAN Utility
    • Other devices should have a WiFi utility for the installed network card. Check your instruction manual for more information
  5. Click Settings
  6. Select AirPennNet from the list of wireless networks.
  7. Under the Network Key tab:
    1. For Authentication type, select Open
    2. For Data Encryption, select WEP
    3. Make sure that "The Key is provided for me automatically" is checked.
  8. Select the 802.1x tab
    1. Make sure "Use IEEE 802.1x network access control" is checked
    2. Under EAP type, select SecureW2 TTLS
  9. Once Secure W2 TTLS is selected in the step above, click Properties
  10. Either keep the Default profile, or create a new one, and name it AirPennNet
  11. Click the Configure tab
  12. Connection tab:
    1. Select Use anonymous outer identity
  13. Click the Certificates tab
    1. Check Verify server certificate
    2. Add both the Thawte Premium Server CA and Thawte Server CA
    3. Check Verify server name
    4. For server name, use dccs.upenn.edu
  14. Click the Authentication tab'
    1. Under Select Authentication Method, select PAP
  15. Click the User Account tab
    1. Either check Prompt user for credentials, or enter your PennKey and Password in this screen
  16. Click OK

You should now be able to authenticate against, and use AirPennNet for your wireless network.

Setting up the connection to AirPennNet using Odyssey

The following intructions were derived using a Dell Axim X30 running Windows Mobile 2003, 2nd edition. The device shipped with the Odyssey client which was crucial to the connection process. If you do not have this client on your device, it is available for purchase from the Odyssey website.

Instructions

  1. Make sure that your WiFi connection is enabled
  2. Click Start-->Settings-->Connections-->Odyssey Client
  3. Click Settings-->Enable Odyssey to turn on the client
  4. Click Settings-->Configure
  5. Click "Add" to add a new configuration.
  6. Click "Scan" to find AirPennNet in the list of networks. If you do not find it listed, you will need to move to where you do receive a signal.
  7. Click on AirPennNet, make sure the radio button has selected "Infrastructure" and click "OK"
  8. Optional: enter a description for your network configuration, and click "Next"
  9. Leave "Association Mode" at the default, make sure "Encryption Method" is set to "WEP", make sure that both "Authenticate using 802.1x and "Keys will be generated automatically for data privacy" are checked
  10. Click "Next"
  11. Enter your PennKey in the "Username" field
  12. Select the "use the following password" radio button and enter your PennKey password. Click "Next"
  13. Use EAP / TTLS as the EAP method and leave "Validate Server Certificate" checked. Click "Next"
  14. Leave the next screen set to "anonymous", click "Next"
  15. For the inner authentication protocol, select "PAP" only. Click "Next"
  16. Click "Finish"

You should now be able to exit the Odyssey Client configuration screen and connect to AirPennNet

  1. In the Odyssey Client main screen, select the "Connect to" checkbox, and select the AirPennNet profile you created above
  2. A window will appear indicating that "You are about to authenticate to an untrusted server!". Click "Yes" to temporarily trust this server.
  3. Your Status windows should now indicate that you are "open and authenticated" and ready to use the network.

Troubleshooting notes

In creating these instructions, I was unable to successfully connect the first time I tried. I had just charged up my unit and had not configured it at all. After failing the first time, I set the proper time zone, date and time, and was able to make a connection.
