Deleted email: Recovering in Exchange

This document provides general instruction for recovering email that has been accidentally deleted. This documentation has been developed on ISC's Exchange 2007 service and may not apply to other Exchange installations on campus.

This document is not part of specific technical details and tactics involved in a migration, which are detailed in many documents linked from the Exchange Migration category.

Recovering Deleted Email

ISC currently archives Exchange email for 14 days. Server-side archival policies will directly influence the time frame for which email is able to be recovered.

Outlook 2003

  • Select the "Deleted Items" folder from the mail section of your Outlook 2003 navigation pane.
  • Select Tools, Recover Deleted Items.
  • Select the email that you would like to recover. Press the Ctrl key then click additional items if you would like to recover multiple email simultaneously.
  • Click the "Recover Selected Items" button to restore selected email. Items are restored to the Inbox in the chronological order in which they had originally been received.

Outlook 2007

  • Select the "Deleted Items" folder from the mail section of your Outlook 2007 Navigation Pane.
  • Select Recover Deleted Items... from the Tools menu. The Recover Deleted Item From dialog will appear. You can sort this dialog by subject, when deleted, who from, and when received.
  • Select the email that you would like to recover. Press the Ctrl key then click additional items if you would like to recover multiple email simultaneously.
  • Click the "Recover Selected Items" button to restore selected email. Items are restored to the Inbox in the chronological order in which they had originally been received.

Entourage 2004

Entourage 2004 has no integrated email recovery feature. Entourage users can recover deleted email via Outlook Web Access, by temporarily using Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007 for email recovery.
