Moving POBOX Classic email to Microsoft Exchange 2007 email is fairly simple. If your POBOX Classic configuration includes local folders storing mail, these instructions assume that they are currently being stored in Entourage 2004 and that you would like to keep them where they are after migrating to Exchange.

Prepare Entourage 2004 For Migration

Migrating POBOX Classic mail to ISC Exchange involves configuring Entourage 2004 for both the POBOX Classic and the ISC Exchange accounts, and then removing the POBOX Classic account after successfully migrating. These instructions assume that Entourage has already been configured for POBOX Classic.

Review POBOX Classic

  1. Launch Entourage and review the user's account setup for IMAP or POP mail. Take note of the folder structure - what is stored locally vs. what is on the POBOX Classic server. (see instructions for Configuring Entourage 2004 for POBOX Classic here).
  2. "Clean up" the mail as appropriate, because it is quicker and easier to move something that is already organized and streamlined.
  3. Close Entourage.

Adding ISC Exchange

  1. Go to Tools > Accounts
  2. Click the Exchange button.
  3. Click the New button. The Set up a Mail Account dialog will appear.
  4. Enable the My account is on an Exchange server checkbox.
  5. In the E-mail address: field, enter your full Exchange email address, i.e. username@exchange.upenn.edu
  6. Click the right-arrow to continue. The Automatic Configuration Failed screen will appear.
  7. Click the right-arrow to continue. The Verify and Complete Settings screen will appear.
  8. In the Your Name: field, enter your name as you wish it appear on outgoing messages.
  9. In the E-mail address: field, verify that your full Exchange email address is present, i.e. username@exchange.upenn.edu
  10. In the Account ID: field, verify that your email name is present, i.e. username
  11. In the Password: field, enter your email password. You may enable the Save password in the Mac OS X Keychain checkbox so you do not have to authenticate every time.
  12. In the Domain: field, enter kite
  13. In the Exchange server field, enter outlook.exchange.upenn.edu
  14. In the LDAP server: field, enter directory.upenn.edu
  15. Enable the Use SSL for these servers checkbox.
  16. Click the right-arrow to continue. The Optional: Verify Settings screen will appear.
  17. Click the right-arrow to continue. A dialog box will ask if you want to verify your account settings.
  18. Click the Skip button. The Setup Complete screen will appear.
  19. In the Account name: field, enter POBOX Exchange. You may enable the Add this new e-mail address to your "Me" contact checkbox if you want to include this email address in Entourage's contact information.
  20. Click the Finish button. The Exchange environment will begin to load. Depending on how much mail, contacts, and calendar items are in your POBOX Exchange account, this may take a while.

Transfer Mail Within Entourage 2004

  1. Open Entourage 2004.
  2. Expand both the POBOX Classic and the ISC Exchange folders.
  3. For the default folders that are created by Entourage (such as Inbox, Sent, and Drafts), either manually copy or manually move the contents of the POBOX Classic folders to their Exchange equivalents. Note that this transfer process may take a substantial amount of time, especially for users with significant amounts of email.
  4. For folders that are not automatically created by Entourage (i.e., folders that the user has created), either manually copy or manually move the folders to Exchange. Note that this transfer process may take a substantial amount of time, especially for users with significant amounts of email.
  5. After all the mail is successfully migrated, send a series of test messages to and from the account to verify that that routing is working appropriately and that mail is being stored in desired folders.

Remove POBOX Classic Account From Entourage 2004

After verifying that everything is operating as expected, remove the POBOX Classic account from Entourage 2004.

  1. Go to Tools > Accounts.
  2. Select the POBOX Classic account.
  3. Click the Delete button.
