Introduction
Note: some of the following information may be out of date as of 05/08
Associating a Research in Motion BlackBerry device with ISC's BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) will allow you to receive push email, calendar items and contacts to and from your BlackBerry.
Important Caveat
The BlackBerry will ONLY show email from the point of activation forward. There will be no record on the BlackBerry of email prior to the date of activation. Email needs to be processed by the BES before it can be pushed to the handheld. The only way around this would be for the user to forward older messages to themselves, thus forcing them to be routed through the BES.
Activation
(First two bullets are obsolete -See BlackBerry links (left pane) at https://am.exchange.upenn.edu/AccountManagement/Default.aspx)
- If you have not already done so, please contact the Provider desk to request that your Exchange account and BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) be created. If you are not a Local Support Provider (LSP), please work with your LSP to have your account activated.
- Once the accounts have been created, you will be contacted by Networking and Telecommunications (N&T) with your BlackBerry Enterprise Activation password. At this point, you can begin the BlackBerry Enterprise Activation process.
- Before proceeding with the official activation, you will need to wipe the device to prevent any activation problems.
- From the main Screen go to:
Options --> Security Options --> General Settings Click the menu button and choose “Wipe Device”
- After a few minutes, the device will be wiped, and ready to proceed further.
- At the main BlackBerry screen, go to:
Options--> Advanced Options--> Enterprise Activation
- Once the email address and password are entered correctly, click the scroll wheel (or track ball) and select "Activate"
- You will see several messages go by, as the device is registerd with ISC's BES server
- Once registered, there will be many lines of information about the status of synchronization.
- You may see the message "Activation Successful".
- At this point, you are ready to use your handheld with ISC's Exchange server.
Options
- There are several levels of security policies being offered by ISC. Please speak with your LSP and N&T about the security level you would like on your BlackBerry. Desktop Sync Options
Once activated, there is no need to synchronize the BlackBerry with a computer for calendar, contact, tasks or email. If you have a need to install additional applications or back up the unit, you can install desktop manager software for this purpose.
Windows
Use the CD that came with the BlackBerry to install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Alternately, visit the BlackBerry Support site and download the latest version of the software.
Macintosh
RIM has licensed PocketMac for BlackBerry for all Macintosh clients. To obtain the latest version, visit the BlackBerry Support site.
