How to Install Remote Desktop on Windows XP
From Provider Wiki
On remote machine:
- Right-click My Computer -> Properties -> Remote tab
- Check off "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer"
- All members of the machine's Administrators group can connect via Remote Desktop. You can add other users by going clicking on the "Select Remote Users" button and clicking "Add" in the dialog box that appears
On local machine connecting to remote machine:
- Start -> Program Files -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection
- Add necessary connection information (make sure to hit the "Options" button to input this info)
NOTE: For added security benefits, some people choose to modify the port that remote desktop communicates over (versus retaining the default). To do so, you will need to change that information on the remote computer and your local machine.
Changing port on Remote Machine
Note: The information on that page is slightly incorrect. "Note The Remote Desktop Connection Client for the Mac supports only port 3389. 3389 is the default port." You can connect to any port simply by typing a colon (:) and port number immediately following the host name.
Please note: You must now open the port you've chosen in any firewall software in use on the remote machine. While opening the newly configured port, disable the common Remote Desktop port (3389) that had previously been opened.
