Linux clients can work with Penn's jabber server.

Configuring Pidgin

Pidgin (formerly known as GAIM) works with the following account configuration:

Basic tab:

Protocol: XMPP
Screen name: <your PENNKEY>
Domain: upenn.edu

Advanced tab:

Connect port:    5222
Connect server:  jabber.upenn.edu

Installing Pidgin

On Debian (with root privilidges) you can install pidgin by typing

 apt-get install pidgin

Debian also has many related packages that can be installed the same way.
