Mac OS: University-Centric Intel-Based Mac Compatibility

The following is an alphabetical list (by developer) of Mac OS applications in use at the University and their compatibility status with Apple's new Intel-based hardware. In most cases, only the latest versions of the applications have been listed, though recent version are listed if they require a paid upgrade.

Some 'Classic' applications - do not function (there will be no version of 'Classic' for Intel-based Macs)

Many Java applications - do not function (those with JNI Libraries built for PowerPC-based Macs)


  • AEC FastTrack 9.0 - compatible but not native
  • Allume StuffIt Expander 10.0.x - compatible but not native (StuffIt Expander 10.1, which is compatible and native, is in beta)
  • Alsoft Disk Warrior X.x - does not function
  • AOL 10.3.7 - compatible but not native
  • AOL Instant Messenger 4.7 - compatible but not native
  • Apple Aperture 1.1.x - compatible and native
  • Apple AppleCare CD - does not boot Intel computers
  • Apple Backup 3.1 - compatible and native
  • Apple Final Cut Studio 5.0, includes:
Apple DVD Studio Pro 4.0.x - does not function
Apple Final Cut Pro 5.0.x - does not function
Apple Motion 2.0.x - does not function
Apple Soundtrack Pro 1.0.x - does not function
  • Apple Final Cut Studio 5.1.x, includes:
Apple DVD Studio Pro 4.1.x - compatible and native
Apple Final Cut Pro 5.1.x - compatible and native
Apple Motion 2.1.x - compatible and native
Apple Soundtrack Pro 1.1.x - compatible and native
  • Apple Final Cut Express HD 3.0.x - does not function
  • Apple Final Cut Express HD 3.5.x - compatible and native
  • Apple iLife '06 (iTunes 6.0.2, iPhoto 6, iMovie HD 6, iDVD 6, GarageBand 3, iWeb 1.0) - compatible and native (included with new Macs, available for $39)
  • Apple iWork '06, includes:
Apple Keynote 3.0.x - compatible and native
Apple Pages 2.0.x - compatible and native
  • Apple Logic Express 7.1 - does not function ($29 update to compatible and native Logic Express 7.2 will be available in March, 2006)
  • Apple Logic Pro 7.1 - does not function ($49 update to compatible and native Logic Pro 7.2 is available now)
  • Apple Mail 2.0.5 - compatible and native
  • Apple QuickTime 7.x - compatible and native
  • Apple Remote Desktop 2.2
Managing Application 2.2 - does not function
Client 2.2.1 - compatible and native (included with new Macs, works with 2.2 managing application)
  • Apple Remote Desktop 3.0 - compatible and native
  • Apple Safari 2.0.3 - compatible and native
  • AppleWorks 6.2.x - compatible but not native
  • Adobe Creative Suite - compatible but not native (future release versions will be native)
  • Adobe Lightroom Beta 2 - compatible and native
  • Adobe Reader 7.0.x - compatible but not native
  • Adobe/Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 and 8.0 - compatible but not native
  • Adobe/Macromedia Fireworks 8.0 - compatible but not native
  • Adobe/Macromedia Flash 8.0 - compatible but not native
The flash plugin does have an unsupported preview version that is a Universal Application, and Adobe has stated that the Flash 9.0 release will be Universal.
  • Avid/Digidesign Pro Tools 6.x and 7.x - does not function
  • Bare Bones BBEdit 8.2.x - compatible and native
  • Bare Bones TextWrangler 2.1.x - compatible and native
  • Carbon Copy Cloner 2.3 - compatible but not native
  • databeast dataComet Secure X 10.0.2 - compatible but not native
  • EMC/Dantz Retrospect Server 6.1 - compatible but not native
  • EndNote 9 - compatible but not native (may have problems when MS Office goes native)
  • Fetch 5.1 - compatible and native
  • FileMaker Mobile 8.0 - does not function
  • FileMaker Pro 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0 - compatible but not native
  • FileMaker Server 8.0 and Server 8.0 Advanced - does not function
  • Flip4Mac (Windows Media Player QuickTime Plugin) - somewhat compatible but not native - requires MacOS X 10.4.5 and does not work unless the browser is running as a Rosetta application (developer working on Intel version)
    • July 28, 2006 Flip4Mac is now a Universal Binary with version 2.1
  • FlowJo 4.6.1 (flow cytometry software) - compatible but not native
    • June 23, 2006 FlowJo is now a Universal Binary with version 8.1.1
  • Intuit Quicken 2006 - compatible but not native
  • LANDesk X.x - compatible but not native (future release versions will be native)
  • Lasergene DNAStar v6 - compatible but not native (network license tested)
  • Marketcircle Daylite 3.0 - compatible and native
  • MathWorks MATLAB X.x - does not function
  • Micromat TechTool Pro 4 - does not function
  • Microsoft Messenger 5.1.1 - compatible but not native
  • Microsoft Office v.X and 2004 - compatible but not native (future release versions will be native)
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop Client 1.0.3 - compatible but not native
  • Microsoft Virtual PC 7.0.2 - does not function
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 10.0 - compatible but not native (player has been discontinued for the Mac OS) - browser plugin does not work while Safari is running as a native Intel application
  • Mindvision VISE X 3.0 - compatible but not native (creates compatible and native installers)
  • Mozilla Camino 1.0.x - compatible and native
  • Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.2 and above - compatible and native
  • Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 - compatible and native
  • MT-NewsWatcher 3.4 - compatible but not native
  • MySQL 5.0.18 - compatible and native
  • Nemetschek VectorWorks 12 - compatible and native (free update has been promised)
  • Netopia Timbuktu X.x - compatible but not native (future release versions will be native)
  • Nisus Writer Express 2.6 - compatible but not native (Nisus Writer Express 2.6.1, which is compatible and native, is in beta)
