Using Aid4Mail to Migrate Mail Stores

From Provider Notes

Jump to: navigation, search

Aid4Mail is a Windows program from Fookes Software that is designed to migrate mail stores from one format to another, or to standard mailbox files. Additionally, it can take mail from non-standard stores like the Eudora mail store and rebuild it with or without attachments into a MIME store. All of these messages can be archived directly into a .zip file for later retrieval.

In an example usage scenario, a user's mail needs to be migrated from their Eudora client to the new Exchange environment that they will be using. However, they don't need any mail more than a year old to be located on the server. The user's mail could be exported from Eudora in two shifts: The first to migrate all e-mail more than a year old to a .zip or .pst that they keep for archival purposes. The second shift would migrate the remainder of the mail into a .pst which would be imported into Outlook. Then, when the user is logged into Exchange, they can drag the imported folder into the appropriate directories in their Exchange mailbox.

Using Aid4Mail

Using Aid4Mail is fairly simple. The entire operation is point- and- click, and fairly quick.

  1. After installing Aid4Mail, run the program. You will be presented with a list of mail formats that Aid4Mail will be able to import. You can even tell it to search for the mail store.
  2. Confirm the location of the mail store, as well as whether subfolders should be included.
  3. Select the format you would like the messages exported to. It is here that you can tell Aid4Mail to filter the messages.
  4. At the next screen, if you selected the filter option, you will be able to create your filters. This allows you to filter e-mail by date, or by information in the header. Very useful if you only want to export e-mail sent from a certain address, or are only interested in archiving mail before a certain date.
  5. Select the target where you would like to put the generated file, as well as options like display name and file name.
  6. Select additional options like whether to keep the full message with attachments and whether to add duplicate messages.
  7. Confirm the configuration and press Start. The software will process your mailbox store and create a new mailbox store in the format you chose. Aid4Mail's activity will be logged and a error log will be generated for you to review any problems encountered in the processing.
